Welton Room, a new cocktail bar in Five Points, will open in April at the base of the Lydian apartments, 2590 Welton St. #103.

Call them molecular cocktails, performative cocktails or the cocktails of your childhood dreams. Starting next month, two Los Angeles bartenders are introducing cotton candy martinis, cognac sorbets and other experimental drinks to the Five Points neighborhood.

Chokedee (Champ) Buabucha and Jorge Ortega’s new bar, Welton Room, opens in mid-April at the base of the Lydian apartments, 2590 Welton St.

Their drinks, priced at $14, will be all about the special effects, whether with liquid nitrogen in the alcohol or dry ice poured over top. For example, Buabucha and Ortega turn ginger, yuzu and cognac into sorbet; they dissolve cotton candy into a (sugar-free) lemon drop; and they float margaritas with Grand Marnier in the form of a whipped cream cadillac.

The margarita should be good — Ortega was a finalist in Patrón’s 2018 margarita of the year contest. For his part, Buabucha says he has a proven track record of the cotton candy martini’s popularity based off of the response in L.A.

“Eighty percent of my clientele will be girls who want to take photos with my cocktails,” he said playfully.
